A Fresh Currency
And assets: air hockey. Can I monetize air hockey genius?
Somewhere between this post and the last posts’ featured finds photos we found a Dave & Buster’s card at the Irvine Spectrum. If Dave & Busters has not come to your country yet, it is a sports and gambling bar with an arcade for kids. We checked the balance and it was loaded with approximately $50.00. Of course we could only use it at Dave & Busters, so we did. That was a lot of laughing. It was the first time I played air hockey in 20 years and I have not lost my touch. I still remember the looks on the faces of the 17 year old boys I faced off with at their birthday party. They had their own air hockey table. I played at an arcade maybe once a year. I creamed them. The only reason I lost the last game was their absolutely horrified and confused faces made me laugh so hard I couldn’t breathe.
I hate foosball, by the way.
In more recent history I gingerly picked this penny up off a Palm Desert grocery story parking lot. It was 105 degrees Fahrenheit outside. We then went to hang out with my future sister-in-law and her friends for an hibachi pool party which was fun and often hilarious. It did remind me that I have very close to 0 literacy in 80’s pop music.
Then my fiance and I went wedding ring shopping at the Gem Faire. I like Gem Faires. I do think the Del Mar one was better than the Costa Mesa one has ever been. I should probably go to Arizona or new Mexico for the best experience. I took him to the Del Mar one back when we first started dating, so it was special to go to a gem faire for this. It took a while but we found the perfect beautiful ring for me, did not even have to resize it, no reservations like some of the other contestants we found. I will post it once I am officially wearing it. I’m still glowing with contentment and joy that we found our treasure together. I could not help thinking of my convent ring, which was a simple gold band, and how it was totally everything I did not want in a wedding ring and how that was one of many signals I dismissed that I was not making the right decision there. It seems superficial but it wasn’t. I am with someone now who respects and enjoys my unique taste and expression, rather than trying to stuff it into commonplace conventions. With him I have a face, where before I was erased. There was a valid reason for the convent erasure that I had accepted, and a gold ring by itself would have been bearable, but in that convent the erasure was taken much farther than the superficialities I had bargained for. The spirit was being slain.
So, here is a penny to new life!
Some friends make these and sell them privately. Let me know if you are interested and I can hook you up.
